Environments and Communities

Social conditions and their surrounding built environment are intrinsically linked.
Public space drives community transformation by giving neighborhoods access to enact social leadership. Similarly, the defecit of urban quality suffered by overlooked neighborhoods perpetuates the lack of community fabric and stalls efforts to improve urban functionality and livability.

The Urban Health Issue

Rapid global urbanization has surpassed the systemic will and human ability to adapt to growing city sprawl with healthy form and function. The urban heat island, population overdensity, and lack of green spaces are imperative examples of  urban problems that impact livability of impoverished neighborhoods.

Shaping Urban Determinants of Health

At Hangin, we design urban interventions that prioritize the health and well-being of communities. Our goal is to create spaces that foster physical activity, rest, and play, ultimately promoting mental and social well-being. We recognize the critical need to adapt to a changing climate, particularly in communities highly exposed to extreme heat. To mitigate this impact, we work to incorporate renewed and vernacular materials, reducing our environmental footprint and promoting local, circular supply chains.

The Power of Participation

Our methodology is informed by research that acknowledges communities as experts of their own needs. The Evidence Based Health Design Landscape Architecture Model (EBHDLA), and Community-Based Participatory-Research (CPBR), are theoretical frameworks that collaborate with communities and use qualitative data to identify the roots of health outcomes and their appropriate interventions.

The Hangin Story

Hangin was originally conceptualized as an action to provide refugee centers with facilities for outdoor exersice . The founders, Pablo Nic Lasso, and Hugo Marmara, met at Copenhagen University’s School of Landscape Architecture in a course titled Health Design. Since then, Hangin has developed an inclusive mission to discover effective urban solutions alongside diverse communities.
